“ No, not really.” She said vaguely. She is hiding something from me, whatever it is, I must find out!
Chapter 8
I finished off the last bit of my bread.
“I think it’s about time for you to go to school.” Sophie noted, looking at her watch.
I picked up my bag and grabbed on to the keys.
“Bye Sophie, bye Elizabeth.” I called. “Oh wait, where shall I meet you for the movie?” I asked.
“Umm, just outside the cinema.” Said Sophie.
“Ok bye.” I tied my shoelaces and left.
I jumps off the footsteps joyfully with the thought I was going to see my favorite movie again. My heart cooled down soon after.
My hair was blown to my face by a cool gust of wind. Seconds after the whole street was drowned by the reddish leaves. Then I realized it was early autumn. My mind was dragged back to one point of my memory. It was when my only sister died. That day was in early autumn, leaves were flying all over the streets. My sister, Cencila, Julia and I were at the hospital. The windows were opened, my sister was lying on the bed, smiling to me. She had a illness which nothing can help her. Then all of a sudden a strong gust of wind flew in the room which made her hair covered her whole face. When the wind left, I carefully lifted her hair from her face, which was when I screamed. I found her totally pale, motionless and dead. The wind had killed her. What hurted me the most was that david didn’t even bother to come to the hospital for her last breath. Instead of being sad, he was happily going on a date with his ‘girlfriend number 11’ (Which means he has many) What a father!
“Why do I always have to think about the sad things?” I asked my self a question that I couldn't answer.
I smiled, or maybe just to make my self better. “Think of the bright side” I said quietly, which was when I got to Julia’s house.
“I hope she isn’t late again.” I went over and rang her bell vigorously. The door opened and I saw the same pale and skinny woman.
“Hi Mary.” I said tardily when I saw the expression on her face.
“Hi Annie,” She said weakly. “Sweetie, are you alright?”
I looked at her with a puzzled look. “What do you mean, why wouldn’t I be?” She turned around to hide from my question.
“Oh well, you are here to get Julia, I’ll get her for you.” She said vaguely. “No, wait!” I pulled her back. “Give me an explaination first.” I said sternly.
“Oh it’s nothing, I just asked because I …” she stopped and then continued. “I just thought you wouldn't like to have a stepmother.”
At the mention of my stepmother my whole face brightened up.
“Oh god! Are you kidding me?” I burst out. “She is just wonderful.” I praised.
“That's good, take good care.” Mary said as if she was never going to see me again. Julia had just scarcely finished brushing her teeth.
“Come on!” I rushed. “We don't want to be late for school do we?”
“ Okay, okay I am coming.” Julia gave Mary a quick kiss and came out.
We walked towards the school together. Then there was a strained silence.
“Julia, don't you think your mum is acting a bit weird these days?” I asked at last. She gave me a plain and innocent look.
“No, not really. That’s how she act normally.” She replied.
“Did she tell you anything unusual?” I decided to ask again but the answered disappointed me again.
“ No, not really.” She said vaguely.
She is hiding something from me, whatever it is, I must find out!
