1. A humorous answer　邓肯与肖伯纳

　Duncan was a famous woman dancer. She was very beautiful and successful in dancing, but she wasn't  so bright.
　　Bernard Shaw was a world-famous writer and humorist1, but he was an ordinary-looking2 man.
　　Duncan admired3 Bernard Shaw's genius4 for literature and wrote to him for love. In her letter she said, “Dear Mr. Bernard Shaw, I love you very much. You have a wise brain and I have a pretty body. If we get married, I'm sure we will have a baby with your brain and my body.”
　　Having received Duncan's letter, Bernard Shaw gave her a humorous answer. It said, “Dear Miss Duncan, glad to receive your letter, but I dare not accept your love. I love you even more, but I'm sorry I can't marry you because I'm afraid that if we get married perhaps we will have a baby with your brain and my body.”

 

2. A girl just like mother 酷似母亲的女友

　　No matter which girls he brought home, the young man found disapproval1 from his mother. A friend gave him advice.
　　“Find a girl just like your mother—then , she's bound to2 like her.”
　　So the young man searched and searched, and finally found the girl. He told his friendly adviser:
        “Just like you said, I found a girl who looked, talked, dressed, and even cooked like mother, and just as you said, mother liked her.”
　　“So,” asked the friend,“What happened?”
　　“Nothing,” said the young man. “My father hates her!”

　　A friend of mine was giving an English lesson to a class of adults who had recently1 come to live in the United States. After placing quite a number of everyday objects on a table, he asked various2 members of the class to give him the ruler, the book, the pen and so on. The class went very smoothly3 and the students seemed interested and serious about the work that they were engaged in until when my friend turned to an Italian student and said, “Give me the keys.” The man looked surprised and somewhat at a loss4. Seeing this, my friend thought that the student hadn't heard him clearly, so he repeated, “Give me the keys.” The Italian shrugged5 his shoulders. Then, he threw his arms around the teacher's neck and kissed him on both cheeks6.
