I think that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.
A tree whose hungry mouth is pressed
Against the earth's sweet flowing breast;
A tree that looks at God all day
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;
A tree that may in summer wear
A nest1 of robins2 in her hair;
Upon whose bosom3 snow has lain;
Who intimately4 lives with rain.
Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.

像树一般优美的诗篇。
树那饥渴的嘴紧紧贴住
大地乳汁甘美的胸脯;
它整天仰望着上帝
举起枝叶繁茂的手臂祈祷;
它茂密如发的枝叶里
夏天可住一窝知更鸟;
白雪曾躺在它怀中;
雨水与它亲密同住。
诗歌出自我等愚人之手,
而树却是造化之工。
再优美的诗歌也不如一棵树可爱而妩媚么?这怎么可能?原来树吮吸了大地母亲的乳汁,然后伸出多叶的胳膊为全人类祈祷——这一空间的变化再现了大树恭孝如子、知恩图报的美德。
在炎热的夏季,树是知更鸟的家;在寒冷的冬季,树又与白雪为伴——这一时间的变迁点明了树的慈爱与高洁。诗有如此多情么?
树与自然一体,汇天地之精华,如此尤物当然只有上苍才能孕育。而诗歌有许多只是矫揉造作、无病呻吟的产物,岂可与鬼斧神工之树相提并论?
全诗对仗工整,用语平淡中见神奇,多重的拟人耐人寻味。
