At the grand ceremony for the release of her second CD, Irresistible, Jessica Simpson, looking fabulous1 and super-confident2, smiled brightly to an admiring crowd of 400-plus3 guests and shouted “I'm the queen of the world!”from the bow4 of a yacht5 cruising6 along Manhattan's East River.
In the year 2000  Jessica quickly became a major pop star and ranks7 now with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. Her first CD sold two million copies and her second CD sold over 120,000 copies during its week out and entered Billboard's album chart at No.6 in  June, 2000. However, on her way to stardom8, she has often been upset9 by low self-esteem10. In her eyes, everything she accomplished11 seemed to pale12 in comparison to what she didn't. In a recent interview, she revealed13 her battle with low self-esteem: “I'm sure most girls go through a stage where they can't bear to look in the mirror14. I used to dread15 getting ready for school. I'd try on hundreds of clothes and decide what made me look fat and what made me look good. Having low self-esteem is not just about appearance, although for me it was a major part. It's a lack of confidence in your inner self. It's about how you feel about yourself and a lot of this comes from what others think of you. I've learned not to let this bother16 me too much now, but it definitely17 used to. ”
“Things started to get bad at high school. I always knew I wanted to be a performer18 so I entered loads of19 singing competitions and dance classes. Look at yourself in a mirror for six hours isn't great20  for your confidence. And when people start saying you're not good enough and you'll never make it21, you soon start to believe it.”
“At school, if you had blonde hair22 you were labeled23 a dumb head24. It really got me down25, so I started bunking26 classes. When you believe what people are saying about you, you question everything about yourself. It's horrible.”
“School is also about whether you know the popular crowd.  The 'cool crowd27' used to make me feel so bad. I don't even talk to those people now because half of them are losers28 and working in McDonald's.”
“Three Kisses was released when I was 17, so obviously I've grown up in the spotlight. What I've experienced with the media is the same as at high school: name-calling29 and malicious rumours30, but on a higher level. Someone will print a picture of me in the middle of a performance and I'll look weird31 because I'm singing. The thing is, I don't have make-up artists32 and hair stylists33 with me all day, they can't airbrush34 every single picture of me. Those pictures are the real me. It used to really bother me when people criticized them. ”
“I reached a point about six months ago where I realized things had to change. I was making my new record and knew I needed a focus35. I got sick of people saying, 'Do this like Britney and do this like Christina'. While making this record I really found who Jessica Simpson was. Everyone who's been in contact with me since then has told me that I'm a different person.
Finding that confidence depends on the area of your life that you most need it. For me, it was my appearance and my voice. Instead of  complaining about not being toned36, I started going to the gym. I've also done a lot of work on my singing. Confidence is all about pulling off stuff37 you didn't think you could manage. Don't oppress yourself by thinking 'I can't do that,' just give it a go38.”“The wisest thing you can do is figure out39 who you are as a person and not let others put you down40.”
Jessica also differs in other ways from the other girl stars. She started dating41 at the age of 18 and now at 21 she is still a virgin42 and she has vowed to remain a virgin until marriage. After she made the vow in March 2000 to Teen People, mails from readers came like avalanche43 to the magazine.  Now in the press, when you read the words “Jessica Simpson,” the word “virgin ” usually isn't far behind. Her fans notice her differences. One of them said of her, “Jessica isn't all glitz and glamour44. She sticks to45 her thing about celibacy46 and she's been sticking to it for a while. People may look at Britney and Christina and say that they're role models47, but I think the reason people consider them role models is because they have good style48. Jessica isn't all about that. She's about being herself.”  Another fan said that it was her focus on singing that set Jessica apart from Britney and Christina. And that Jessica will always “be the singer”. It is so true. Jessica admits that she has never been comfortable with moving it and shaking it in the public. She prefers to close her eyes and stand still while she sings, just like she did when she sang in her church choir49 as a child.
