1. Do you have the time?
现在几点？

　　我们在学校所学的“现在几点？”的英文是What time is it?, 但是在美国却较常使用 Do you have the time? 这一说法。the time 在此含有“手表”的意思，因为不知道对方是否戴着手表，所以向对方询问时间，使用Do you have the time? 要比What time is it? 更合适。
A: Excuse me. Do you have the time?
B: Yes. It's a quarter to ten.
A: Thank you.
B: You're welcome.
A: 请问现在几点？
B: 嗯，差十五分十点。
A: 谢谢。
B: 不客气。

2.  How long will the next bus be?
下一班车要等多久？

　　“下一班车要等多久？ ”英语的标准说法应该是How long will it be before the next bus arrives? 只是美国人觉得这样讲，句子太长，很麻烦，所以就简化成 How long will the next bus be?
——At a bus stop——
A: How long will the next bus be?
B: About five minutes.
A: Really? How often do the buses run on this route?
B: Every 10 minutes or so.
A: That's not too bad.
——在公共汽车站——
A: 下一班车要等多久？
B: 大概要等五分钟。
A: 是吗？这条线的公车隔多久一班?
B: 大约十分钟就有一班车。
A: 那还好。

3. How long have you been gone?
你离开多久了？

　　这句话里有使用How long 和gone这样的单词，常会让人误解对方是在问“去多远的地方？”事实上，这句话是指 “你离开多久了？”的意思。这时的回答要用明确的时间，比如one week 或one month。
A: May I see your passport and green card, please?
B: Here you go.
A: How long have you been gone?
B: About two weeks.
A: 我能看一下你的护照和绿卡吗？
B: 给你。
A: 你离开多久了？
B: 大概两周。

4. Be punctual, please.
请准时。

　　有人把“准时”说成Keep time。其实Keep time 不是“遵守时间”。而是“跟上节奏”或“合着拍子唱或跳”的意思。“守时”的正确说法应该是Be punctual 或者Be prompt。
A: I'm sorry. I'm late, Sir.
B: Don't be tardy again, Jim.
A: I won't, Sir. I'll be prompt from now on.
B: Good. Being punctual is very important.
A: 老师，对不起，我迟到了。
B: 吉姆，以后不要再迟到了。
A: 我不会的，老师。以后我一定准时。
B: 这就对了。准时是非常重要的。

5. That's pretty short notice.
时间太过仓促。

　　Short的意思是“短的”、“不充足的”。这句话的字面解释是“有点短的通知”，也就是“时间太过仓促”的意思。
A: You can pick up your suit next Saturday.
B: Oh, no. I must have it by Thursday morning at the latest. I'm going overseas Thursday afternoon.
A: That's pretty short notice, but we'll see what we can do.
B: Please, otherwise I'll be in trouble.
A: 下个星期六您可以来拿您的西装。
B: 噢，不行，最迟星期四早上就要拿到，因为我星期四下午就出国了。
A: 这有点赶，不过我们尽力。
B: 拜托，不然我就麻烦了。

6. I'll drop by one of these days.
哪天我去看你。

　　drop by是“顺道拜访”的意思。意思相同的短语还有drop in, stop by和stop in. 美国人常用one of those things, 除了表示“其中之一”的意思，还有“常有的事”、“无关紧要的事”、“无可奈何的事”等意思。
——Two men bump into each other on the street——
A: Hi, Tom. Long time no see.
B: Yeah. How're you doing, John?
A: I'm doing fine. Is your office still on Adams Street?
B: Yes.
A: I'll drop by one of these days.
B: Please do.
——两个人在街上偶然相遇——
A: 嗨，汤姆，好久不见。
B: 是啊。约翰，近来好吗？
A: 还好。你的办公室还在亚当街吗？
B: 是啊。
A: 哪天我去看你。
B: 一定要来哦。

 
7. Seven years ago tomorrow.
到明天就七年了。

　　美国人常用seven years ago tomorrow这种说法，是指“明天就是从过去某一天算起的7周年”。如果今天是2002年6月20日，那seven years ago tomorrow就是指1995年6月21日。
A: Your uncle is a widower, isn't he?
B: Yes, he is.
A: When did his wife die?
B: Seven years ago tomorrow.
A: 你婶婶过世了吧？
B: 是啊。
A: 她什么时候过世的？
B: 到明天就7年了。

8.  Better late than never.
迟到总比不到好。

　　应该做的事情，即使迟了也总比不做要好，用英语表达是Better late than never。Late的意思是“迟的、晚的”，可以当形容词，也可以当副词。
A: Why the long face, Jim?
B: Yesterday was our wedding anniversary and I forgot about it.
A: Oh, yeah? Why don't you buy her a present or flowers today? Better late than never.
B: Yeah, you're right. I think I'll have a florist deliver flowers to her now, and I'll take her to a fancy restaurant tonight.
A: 吉姆，你怎么愁眉苦脸的呀？
B: 昨天是我们的结婚纪念日，但我忘了。
A: 噢，是吗？何不今天买礼物或送花给她？迟做总比不做好啊。
B: 是啊，你说得对。我现在就叫花店送一束花给她，然后晚上带她去高级餐厅。
