It will cost about $104 billion over the next 10 years to build a new spacecraft to send astronauts back to the moon, NASA's chief said on Sept.19, 2005. The $104 billion cost represents 55 percent of what the Apollo program cost in today's dollars. If all goes well, the first crew of four would set off for the moon by 2018. The new spacecraft allows the astronauts to stay on the moon for a week—twice as long as Apollo missions. Its larger capacity allows more cargo, much of which would be left on the moon for future crews.
