Daniel Radcliffe, at twelve, is about to be a global superstar7. For him, it seems still unbelievable that he was picked as an actor to play Harry Potter more than a year ago. He remembers the night he was told he won the part of Harry: It was a Friday and he was in the bath. “My dad came in and said, 'Dan, guess who they have chosen to play Harry Potter'. I said the name of another actor, because I totally did not think in a million years that they would pick me. 'Someone else?' he said. When he said that, I suppose I did have a tiny bit of hope that I might have got it, but I didn't want to count my chickens8. And then he said, 'Dan9, it's you.' I actually cried with joy. It was the biggest shock of my life. ”
Playing Harry Potter is obviously a huge, lucrative10, golden opportunity for Daniel. He has made one film, is waiting to make the second film, The Chamber of Secrets, and is being considered for the next five films. This means he could be playing Harry Potter until he's almost twenty. He will earn a large amount of money from the films. Exactly how much is a secret that he and his parents will keep to themselves, but it could be about one million pounds for each movie. That's a lot of money for a 12-year-old. “I think I'll save it,” says Daniel matter-of-factly11. “I don't know how much I'm getting, and I don't want to know because I don't think that's important. It's not about the money, it's about having fun and meeting people.” This is perhaps why Daniel has done so well in the acting. Robbie Coltrane, who worked alongside the boy playing Hagrid the giant, says of him, “Daniel's a very good actor. And I think that's the key to it, because if he decides to pursue12 it he will do very well. He has a grown-up attitude in a way, and a throw-away attitude13 at the same time. In fact, it's exactly the same kind of attitude that gets us all through it.”
For Daniel, acting is exciting and fun and could easily lead to a career as an adult actor. But his parents have a lot to worry. Before agreeing to let him audition and take the role of Harry Potter, they thought it over painfully for a long time. They worry about his normal school life and what his teachers' actions would be to his acting. As they are also in the show business—his mother Marcia Gresham is a casting director they have the inside knowledge of the way the “business” works, they know what it means for a 12-year-old boy to be an actor. They want to protect their son from possible dangers. His father, who worked for one of the biggest and most powerful agencies on both sides of the Atlantic14, has now given up his job as an agent to represent Daniel fulltime. And when he's on the set, either his mum or dad was there all the time.
While quickly becoming a star, Daniel comes to see more of the world. He says, “It's really funny, but there were a couple of people at school and they had never talked to me before, but as soon as I got the part they started e-mailing me and pretending we were best friends. But my close friends have been totally cool about it. At least I hope they have. And anyway, mum and dad keep me leading a normal life. I have some close friends, and they are the same as before I did this. They want to know about it, of course they do, and some of them have come on set to have a look and see it. But nothing's changed.”
Star as he is, he's not all like those Hollywood stars who talk a lot about themselves and expect people to give them all the importance of stardom15. Daniel is exceedingly16 polite, bright and lovely. He'll tell you that he loves the Simpsons, Ali G and WWF wrestling, supports his local team, Fulham, and likes gym and science best at school and e-mailing his best friends. As one reporter puts it, “When you meet Daniel himself, it's impossible not to like him.”
