Summary
It is a humorous story of love and life among English gentility1 during the late 18th century.
Mr. Bennet is an English gentleman living in Hartfordshire with his wife. Bennet has five daughters: the beautiful Jane, the strong-willed Elizabeth (Keira Knightley), the bookish Mary, the immature2 Kitty and the wild Lydia. Unfortunately for the Bennets, if Mr. Bennet dies their house will be inherited by a distant cousin, so the family's future happiness and security depend on the daughters making good marriages. The five Bennet sisters have all been raised with one purpose in life: finding a husband of wealth and good standing.
Life is uneventful3 until the arrival in the neighborhood of the rich Mr. Bingley. Mr. Bingley brings with him his two sisters and the dashing4 (and richer) but proud Mr. Darcy (Matthew Macfadyen). The Bennets are abuzz5. Love is soon in the air for one of the Bennet sisters. But when Elizabeth meets up with6 the handsome and—it would seem—snobbish7 Mr. Darcy, the battle of the sexes is joined...
Comments
What makes “Pride” such an enduring work from Jane Austen (one of the most adapted novels to television and the big screen in history) is the yearning for romance. Filmmakers have come from near and far to adapt her novels, yet they all seem to focus on the inability for anyone to express themselves freely. But in his big screen directing debut, Wright isn't concerned with8 packing the “Pride” plot into one tidy film. He is going for emphasizing the confused feelings about Elizabeth's true love, and her frustrations9 with the restrictions in her life. He clings so tightly to Elizabeth's soul-searching10, often through interesting camera work11 that he manages to freshen the material, and make this considerably aged text feel young again.
Behind the Scene
* At the beginning of the movie, Elizabeth is shown reading a novel titled “First Impressions”—this was Jane Austen's original title of her novel before she altered it to “Pride and Prejudice”.
* Director Joe Wright was not initially keen on Knightley playing Elizabeth, believing her to be too attractive. He changed his mind upon meeting her, deciding her tomboyish12 attitude would be perfect for the part.
* Keira Knightley had already cut her hair. She had to wear a wig during the last few weeks of filming and long sleeves to hide her muscles.
