MARIA (Short as “MAR”): I can't seem to stop singing wherever I am. And what's worse, I can't seem to stop saying things. Everything and anything I think and feel.
REVEREND MOTHER (Short as R.Mom): Some people would call that honesty.
MAR: No, but it's terrible, Reverend Mother. You know how sister Berta always makes me kiss the floor after we had a disagreement? Well lately I've taken to kissing the floor when I see her coming just to save time.
R.Mom: Maria, when you saw us over the abbey wall and longed to be one of us, that didn't necessarily mean that you were prepared for the way we live here, did it?
MAR: No, Mother. But I pray and I try and I am learning. I really am.
R.Mom: And what is the most important lesson you have learned here, my child?
MAR: To find out what is the will of God and to do it whole-heartedly.
R.Mom: Maria, it seems to be the will of God that you leave us.
CAPTAIN (Short as CAP): You're the twelfth in a long line of governesses, who have come to look after my children since their mother died. I trust that you will be an improvement on the last one. She stayed only two hours.
MAR: What's wrong with the children, sir?
CAP: There's nothing wrong with the children, only the governesses. They were completely unable to maintain discipline. Without it, the house can not be properly run. You will please remember that, Fraulein.
MAR: Yes, Sir.
CAP: Every morning you will drill the children in their studies. I will not permit them to dream away their summer holidays. Each afternoon they will march about the ground, breathing deeply. Bedtime is to be strictly observed. No exceptions.
MAR: Excuse me, sir. When do they play?
CAPT: You'll see to it that they conduct themselves at all time with the utmost orderliness and decorum, I'm placing you in command.
MAR: Yes, sir.
MAR: At ease. Well now that there's just us. Would you please tell me all your names again and how old you are?
LIESTL: I'm Liesl. I'm sixteen years old and I don't need a governess.
MAR: Well, I'm glad you told me, Liesl. We'll just be good friends.
FRIEDRICH: I'm Friedrich. I'm fourteen. I'm impossible.
MAR: Really? Who told you that, Friedrich?
FRIEDRICH: Fraulein Josephine. Four governesses ago.
LOUISA: I'm Brigitta.
MAR: You didn't tell me how old you are, Louisa.
BRIGITTA: I'm Brigitta, she's Louisa. She's thirteen years old and you're smart. I'm ten and I think your dress is the ugliest one I ever saw.
KURT: Brigitta, you shouldn't say that.
BRIGITTA: Why not? Don't you think it's ugly?
KURT: Of course, but Fraulein Helder's was ugliest. I'm Kurt. I'm eleven. I'm incorrigible.
MAR: Congratulations!
KURT: What's incorrigible?
MAR: I think it means you won't be treated like a boy.
MARTA: I'm Marta and I'm going to be seven on Tuesday. And I'd like a pink parasol.
MAR: Well, pink's my favorite color, too. Yes, you're Gretl, and you're five years old? My, you're practically a lady! Now I have to tell you a secret. I've never been a governess before.
LOUISA: You mean you don't know anything about being a governess?
MAR: Nothing. I'll need lots of advice.
LOUISA: Well, the best way to start is to be sure to tell father to mind his own business.
FRIEDRICH: You must never come to dinner on time.
BRIGITTA: Never eat your soup quietly.
KURT: And during dessert always blow your nose.
MAR: Let's think of something to sing for the Baroness when she comes.
KURT: Father doesn't like us to sing.
MAR: Well, perhaps we can change his mind. Now, what songs do you know?
FRIEDRICH: We don't know any songs.
MAR: Not any?
MARTA: We don't even know how to sing.
BRIGITTA: No.
MAR: Well, let's not lose any time. You must learn.
LIESL: But how?
MAR & CHILDREN: (singing)
Let's start at the very beginning,
A very good place to start.
When you read you begin with ABC.
When you sing you begin with Do Re Mi.
Do Re Mi.
Do Re Mi,
The first three notes just happen to be,
Do Re Mi. Do Re Mi.
Do Re Mi Fa So La Ti.
Let's see if I can make it easier.
*Doe, a deer, a female deer,
Ray, a drop of golden sun.
Me, a name I call myself,
Far, a long, long way to run.
Sew, a needle pulling thread.
La, a note to follow Sew.
Tea, a drink with jam and bread.
That will bring us back to Doe,
Oh, oh , oh. (repeat*)
Do Re Mi Fa So La Ti Do! So Do!
CAP: No, no, no, sit down please. Please. Er... may I? (Sitting down.) You know I was thinking, I was wondering two things. Why did you run away to the abbey, and what was it that made you come back.
MAR: Well, I had an obligation to fulfill and I came back to fulfill it.
CAP: Is that all?
MAR: And I missed the children.
CAP: Yes. Only the children?
MAR: No. Yes! Isn't it right I should have missed them?
CAP: Yes, yes of course. I was only hoping that perhaps you... perhaps you might... er...
MAR: Yes?
CAP: Well... er... nothing was the same when you were away. And it'll be all wrong again after you leave. And I just thought that perhaps you might... er... change your mind?
MAR: I'm sure the Baroness will be able to make things fine for you.
CAP: Maria, there isn't going to be any baroness.
MAR: There isn't?
CAP: No.
MAR: I don't understand.
CAP: Well, we've... er... called off our engagement, you see and... er...
MAR: Oh, I'm sorry.
CAP: Yes. You are?
MAR: You did?
CAP: Yes. You can't marry someone when you're in love with someone else, can you?
MAR: Reverend Mother always said that when the Lord closes one door somewhere else he opens a window.
CAP: What else does the Reverend Mother say?
MAR: That you have to look for your life.
CAP: Is that why you came back? And have you found it, Maria?
MAR: I think I have. I know I have.
CAP: I love you.
MAR: Oh, can this be happening to me?
(At the concert.)
CAP: My fellow Austrians, I shall not be seeing you again perhaps for a very long time, I would like to sing for you now, a love song. I know you share this love. I pray that you will never let it die. (singing)
*Edelweiss, edelweiss,
Every morning you greet me,
Small and white,
Clean and bright,
You look happy to meet me.
Blossom of snow may you bloom and grow.
Bloom and grow forever.
Edelweiss, edelweiss,
Bless my homeland forever. (repeat*)
1
Do, Re, Mi. Do, Re, Mi.
Do, Re, Mi. Do, Re, Mi.
Do, Re, Mi. Fa, So, La, Ti.
“Doe”
“Ray”
“Far”
“Sew”
“Tea”
Doe”
Do, Re, Mi, Fa, So, La, Ti, Do!
So, Do!
