枫桥夜泊
张继
月落乌啼霜满天,
江枫渔火对愁眠。
姑苏城外寒山寺,
夜半钟声到客船。
"While I watch the moon go down a crow caws through the frost.Under the shadows of maple-trees a fisherman moves with his torch.Spending the night on a boat I feel lonely and home sick. And I hear from beyond Suzhou from the Temple on Cold Mountain.Ringing for me here in my boat the midnight bell."
This poem was written by Zhang during his travel in the south. One night his boat was moored near the Maple Bridge to the west of present Suzhou City,Jiansu Province.During that cold and lonely night on the boat,he wrote these famous lines.
Ancient poets always like to express their emotions by using the available natural scenery, seeking a harmonious unity of emotions and scenic views. This short poem is a typical example of success.
