From American Dream to China Dream
人大附中 狄更斯
Ask not what the country can do for us but ask what we can do for her.
Frankly speaking, today, standing here to give my speech on our motherland, I am a little ashamed. It seems that the last time I am excited about motherland is when I was watching Obama`s victory speech. I was impressed by his call to embrace the ideals on which their country was built, by his Attic faith of American dream. At that moment I thought of my motherland ——China. Yes, maybe a little irony, but it was true.
As young generation of China, we are enjoying the prosperity brought by China’s fast developing. We are gaining more and more things that our parents could not imagine when they were as young as us. But something disappears. The long line waiting for signing up to join the army disappears, the grand ceremony after China women volleyball team won the champion disappears, the working records which were broke by oil workers time and time again disappears, the stories of national hero that were once widely told disappears. The things disappear were once what the word motherland means in our parents` mind.
As for us, the word motherland means the following description: she is a big Oriental country with a history of several thousand years. With diligence and wisdom, the Chinese nation created a splendid civilization and made significant contributions to the progress of humanity.
China is always young, while everyone will grow up and get old. When we are old and our children grow up to teen age, what would disappear and what can we leave to them to throw away? How can we explain to them about our motherland?
Now we need a change, a change from American dream to China dream, a change from competence to commitment. We could not do what our parents do as we are too young to do so. As new generation of China, we need to do something ordinary but important: working with a strong sense of responsibility; study hard to gain the ability to built our motherland. Love our motherland just like the love to our mother. Ask not what the country can do for us but ask what we can do for her.
We have to do so to realize our China dream , a dream partly take over from our fathers, partly conceived in our own time.
