Interview with Rooney

Euro 2004 is your first major tournament for England, Wayne! How excited are you about playing in it?
I'm very excited! It's a big tournament for anyone who's involved in it, and especially for an 18-year-old like me.

Will Euro 2004 be the highlight of your career so far?
Yeah, I'd say that—it's definitely14  the biggest time of my career so far and the biggest matches of my life.

Most 18-year-olds going to Euro 2004 would be unknown—do you think it's different for you?
A: I've   been  playing   senior   football  for two years now so possibly yes. But as I say, it's going to be a big, big tournament for the lot of us, and it doesn't matter whether you're 35 or 18 years old—It's just going to be big for England!

How does it feel to become the youngest scorer ever in the European championships?
A: It's always great to break a record, but it's more important that I helped the team to get the right result. But as I say, to break a record like that is very nice for me as well!

Were your two goals against Switzerland the most important of your career so far?
A: I think the second one was—it finished the game, because Switzerland were having a good spell15  and the second goal killed them off16.

Rooney's Teammate Kieron Dyer Says
“They always say there's an up-and-coming17  star in every tournament, and he was our best player in the first two games against France and Switzerland. There are times when we need a little lift18, so he'll take the ball and do something and off we go again! He's a massive19  player for us.”

Sven-Goran Eriksson20 Says
“He is 18 but he plays like he's 28. He's not worried about anything. He's very better in the future but if he stays like this level then I'll be happy. ”

David Beckham Says
“… everyone, including the players, are very proud of him because his performances have been pretty amazing and we're very lucky to have him as an English player.”
