A Whole New JC
“I'd love to have a multi' platinum3 record,” says 'NSync's Chasez. “Get my name up there. Make my mark4 on the world.” Oddly5, a year ago, Chasez didn't want to go anywhere near a recording studio. While 'NSync were taking a break—to accommodate6 Justin Timberlake's solo debut7 album, among other things—Chasez planned to vacation8, and perhaps pursue9 acting. But he got sucked back into the studio by eager producers, including TB and Dallas Austin. “I did one song for fun,” Chasez, 27, says of “Some Girls (Dance With Women),” which soon became a club hit10. “Everybody was like, 'You gotta do a record!'” That record, Schizophrenic11, reflects his eclectic12 influences, from Gary Numan to Stevie Wonder. “I have my own sound,” he says from his pad13 in Miami. “I play it for people and they say, 'Yo, this is different!'”
Questions for JC
So the new record, Schizophrenic, is very eclectic—there's reggae14, rock—were you trying to reel out a bunch of different genres15?
That's the whole thing—I wasn't trying to do anything; it just kind of came out that way. It wasn't like, “We have to make a track16 like this, we have to make a track like that.” It just followed.
Was there a specific driving force behind making a solo record?
I just wanted to have fun. I made this record with my friends. I don't want to be like, “This guy's a hit maker, this guy's hit maker...” I wanted to make something from a personal standpoint17, something organic18 that people would feel was truthful.
Which track on the CD means the most to you?
I wrote the song “Dear Goodbye” about a goodbye letter in a breakup. It was a very emotional19 song for me because one of the guitar players I wrote it with was such a great guy, and he actually passed away before I could play him the final song. So, then I really took it to heart. It was a coincidence20 that the song was called “Dear Goodbye,” and he ended up passing away two days before the song was done. So, it turned into a lot more.
Is the song “She Got Me” really about falling in love with an alien21?
Yeah, I'm a sci-fi-nut22, so I wrote a song about what it would be like to fall in love with an alien. She's pretty cool—she is a pretty sexy alien. It's like ... what's your favorite color? We can make that alien that color if you want [laughs]. Is your favorite color blue? You can fall in love with a blue alien [laughs again]. Who knows?
I know sometimes you write in metaphors23...
In my mind, there's a time and a place for everything. When you want to write something beautiful, write a metaphor. I try to make up things and paint something pretty.
At this point in life, what are you looking for in a relationship?
Every artist needs his Muse24, and as much as I want to deny that—because it sounds like I'm planning it—at the end of the day, it's the truth. When you fall in love, that's your Muse. You don't want it to be a conscious25 thing, but it is. I just want someone to inspire26 me.
What new perspective27 have you gotten from your past relationships?
I know what it's like to be in love. It's outstanding28 and I value it. People who have never really been in love—they want to be in love so bad, but they don't know what it means. I know what it means.
Describe your fave29 moment with a girl.
Every time you're with somebody you want to be with, it's a good thing. It doesn't matter where it is. It doesn't matter what you're doing as long as you're with that person.
What's your biggest turn-on and turn-off30?
I can't stand anybody needy and pushy31. Turn-ons ... there are a million things. Anything positive32—let's just put it that way.
What's the worst outfit33 you ever wore as an 'Nsync member?
Oh, dude34, I can spot that one. The first time we went to the American Music Awards, we went in these spacesuits. It was the first time something was custom-made35 for us. I felt sexy36. Everybody on the red carpet was like, “Those are really, um, interesting.”
Justin said that Justified was better than anything by 'Nsync.
It's probably his best performance and material because he's pushed himself to get better. When we did Celebrity, he thought that was his best work.
Who will be the breakout Backstreet Boy?
Well, they're already getting back together. They all settled down37 and became family men—half of them are married. But on talent alone, I'd say A.J. or Brian.

整个碟子的风格是这样的——不过，我并没有刻意这样做，而是自然而然成了这个样子。我根本就没想，“这支曲子要这样，那支曲子要那样。”纯粹是水到渠成。
有没有什么具体动力驱使你灌制了这张独唱专辑？
我只是为了开心，是跟朋友们一起鼓捣出来的。我不想过于功利：“这个可以扬名，那个可以打响”，我只想从个人角度出发弄一点人们觉得真实的、纯朴自然的东西。
碟子里哪一支单曲你觉得最有意义？
《亲爱的再见》这支歌写的是一封诀别信。在我，这是一支非常动情的歌，因为跟我一块写歌的一个吉他手，一个顶呱呱的小伙子，在我把最后一支完整的歌演奏给他听之前去世了。对此，我很伤心。歌名《亲爱的再见》纯属巧合，他在歌曲做好之前的两天撒手人寰。因此，歌曲的意味就丰富多了。
《她俘虏了我》这首歌是不是关于爱上外星人的？
是的， 我是个科幻迷，于是我就写了一支歌，探讨爱上外星人的感觉。她很酷——是一个很性感的外星人。谈起这个有点像问：你最喜欢什么颜色？你要什么样的颜色，我们就把那个外星人变成什么颜色[笑]。你最喜欢的颜色是不是蓝色？那你可以爱上一个蓝色外星人了[又笑]。谁知道呢！
我知道你有时候爱用隐喻…
在我的脑海里，每件事都与一个时间和地点相连。想描写美丽的事物时，就用隐喻。我试图创作一些东西，描绘美的图景。
你目前这个阶段，恋爱注重的是什么？
每一个艺术家都需要他自己的缪斯，不管我多么想否认这一点——因为这样一来就显得是我自己在计划——最后，事实终归是事实。你爱上的人就是你的缪斯。这不是有意的，但事情就是这样。我需要有人给我灵感。
过去的恋爱让你有了什么新认识？
我懂得了恋爱的感觉。感觉真奇妙，我很珍视。没有真正恋爱过的人，会渴望恋爱，但他们不懂恋爱是怎么回事，而我知道。
