On the morning of April 1, a US spy plane crashed down a Chinese fighter jet off the Southeast coast of Hainan Island. The jet was tracing and monitoring the US spy plane when the latter turned left and caused the air collision (see the picture). The Chinese jet was destroyed and the pilot Wang Wei died. This happened at a time shortly after the US President George Bush took office, and made the Sino-US relations seriously tense.

     4月1日上午，美国一架侦察机在中国海南岛东南海域上空将中国一架喷气式战机撞毁。当时中国战机正对美国侦察机进行跟踪监视，美侦察机突然急速左转，以致造成了空难事件（见图）。中国喷气式战机被毁，飞行员王伟遇难。此事件发生在美国总统乔治·布什上任不久，曾导致中美关系甚为紧张。
