Everything You Want to Know about Harry Potter|《

The players: Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, Emma Watson
The scoop1: This is easily the best Harry Potter film yet, though a few comments need to be made. It is scarier2 than the earlier films and filled with more underlying emotional situations, it is likely to appeal more to adults and teenagers than to younger kids. And if you haven't seen the two previous Potter movies or read J.K. Rowling's wildly popular novels upon which they are based, you may have a tough time figuring out who's who and what's what and miss out on some of the meanings and jokes.
Harry Potter (Radcliffe), now 14, is still a wizard3-in-training at Hogwarts, a school for the magically gifted. He finds himself in apparent danger when an evil wizard, Sirius Black (Oldman), escapes from Azkaban prison. Harry is told that Black passed on information that led to the death of our hero's parents and that he's now after Harry.
Unlike earlier Potter films, where you often felt as if you were watching kids copy grown-up action heroes, the emphasis here is on Harry and his pals meeting dangerous challenges with measured courage and cleverness rather than just daring-do. Director Alfonso Cuarón, new to the series, tightens the focus on characters and relationships.

When you want to get to know someone better, you go straight to the source. Here's what we know about Harry...and what we found out about Daniel.

Harry's at Hogwarts Academy.
Daniel attends private school, not for wizards. And while students are assigned4 to sorting houses, Daniel does find that cliques5 form. “Yeah, that's something I really don't like at all. I hate it the way you get a lot of people just kind of fraternizing6 and not associating with other people.” When we ask him if he is part of any clique, he flatly answers, “No. I hope not.”

Harry is great at Quidditch.
Daniel likes rugby.“I take rugby a lot, but at my school we're not allowed to play full-contact rugby, unfortunately.” Daniel likes to run too. “I run about 100 meters, but the reason I'm not on a track7 team is because I'm not really at school much.”

Harry rides a Nimbus 2000.
Daniel doesn't drive anything. He's 15, and the driving age in the UK is 17. But his dream ride is a fire-red Cadillac. “I actually prefer motorbikes by quite a long way8. For now, my parents drive me.”

Harry has magical powers.
Daniel wishes he had speed power. “So I could get places really fast.” And where is he in such a hurry to get to? “New York or Kyoto. If it was Kyoto, I would visit all the temples and stuff. They're all really interesting. I've been there once, and it was amazing.”

Harry can sometimes predict the future.
Daniel is a tad9 uncertain about his future. “I'm not sure. I don't know what I'm going to do...I can't really say yet. We finished filming so I'm kind of not doing anything. I've actually got some free time, you see. Reading and watching films and just chilling out10 really.”

Harry doesn't have a girlfriend.
Daniel has a crush11. If he were to have a girlfriend, what would she be like? “She would be Scarlett Johansson, um, who I've recently fallen in love with. Um...I would love to meet her.” You know, the 20-year-old New York-born actress who's been cleaning up12 with her Lost in Translation success.

Harry has two best buds in Hermione and Ron.
Daniel has two true friends in Emma and Rupert. In fact, he gets on well with almost everyone on set13. “We really get along as a kind of whole, um, kind of like a family.” The three do keep in touch when not filming, but don't see each other often. “We see so much of each other—we're on set for like 10 or 11 months of the year—the month we have off, we tend to go separate.”

Emma is a bit more chatty than Daniel. She's open and upbeat14—a totally normal 13-year-old, who wishes she had an invisibility cloak15 to sneak into a Red Hot Chili Peppers Concert at the London Arena16.
Besides rocking out, Emma likes to read—and she's excited about recommending her favorites.
And, yes, she reads the Harry Potter books, The Prisoner of Azkaban, of course, being the one on which the most recent movie is based. “I was already halfway through it when I began filming, so I was a massive fan even before we started. I was really excited about the third one—it's my favorite book, it's my favorite script, it's my favorite part for Hermione. I think it's going to be the best one.”
The first two Harry Potter films—The Sorcerer's Stone and Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets—raked in17 nearly $2 billion at box offices around the world, and instant fame for its young stars. Emma is getting used to the recognition18 and fast adjusting to her celebrity19 status. “I suppose the best thing that's ever happened to me was, um, this completely stunned me, a guy asked me to sign a 50-pound note. I couldn't believe it. I was like, 'You know I can put this on paper if you'd like,' and he was like, 'Nope, no.' I was like, 'Whoaaah!'”
Being a star also means having a dressing room—and Emma's is the most elaborately decorated on the HP set. “When I first came into it, it wasn't the nicest thing I'd ever seen. It was just like big white walls, um, plain carpet. I had to do something about it, so I asked if I could paint it. So I painted one of the walls in a massive painting of everything I like. So I've got on it, I've got fashion bags, I've got my favorite car, which is a Mini, I've got ice cream, I've got chocolate, it's just covered. It's really big and really colorful and really happy, so that's cool. And I bought lots of posters and yeah, it's really bright room. And on my door, I've got a massive star, which is dearly20 cool.”
Emma is far from being a demanding celeb, but there are certain items she doesn't like to be without during filming. “I'm really picky about my shampoo and conditioner, and I must have a hair dryer with me 'cause it really annoys me when I have my hair wet. Oh, I have to have my mobile phone—I feel lost without it—lip gloss, definitely, hmm, what else? Oh, my teddy bear21, definitely.”
Emma's somewhat of a star athlete, too. She plays field hockey, tennis and rounders, which is kinda the English version of baseball. “Field hockey is one of my favorites. I love netball [basketball]. I love athletics22.”
She's got it going on, right? But, as it turns out, even international fame doesn't help when it comes to interfacing with23 the opposite sex. “I try, but it's so hard. Guys are just, ugh, especially teen-age boys—it's just one-word answers to every question you give them. They're annoying. It's awful.”
Emma fares much better with her female pals—a close-knit group of four or five she kicks it with when filming wraps24. “If we're outside school, we go to the center of Oxford and watch a film. We hang out in Starbucks. We go and choose CDs, talk, go to each other's houses, normal girly stuff.”
Oh, and one more thing. “I make great pancakes25.”

How has your life changed since you've done the films?
It's a little bit different, but we try to keep it as normal as we could. We still do normal things. It hasn't really changed that much, just a few things. You get recognized, but it's basically the same.

Are you treated differently in school?
Not really.

Rupert, do you come from a large family?
Yeah, yeah, I have quite a large family. I'm one of five children. And yeah, so it's quite big. I'm the oldest.

Are you a conscientious26 student?
I'm all right. I've never really enjoyed school so much, either.

Do you feel the fame has put any strain on your life?
Not really. It's longer hours than what we put in at school.

What would you do if you could get your hands on an invisibility cloak—would you have one?
Oh, yeah, definitely. They're really useful. Yeah, um, you could use it for anything, really, like for detention27. That'd be really good.

You know how Emma complains about teenage boys having one-word answers to every question? That's Rupert!

What's your favorite scene in this movie?
DANIEL RADCLIFFE: the Shrieking Shack scene because it's basically the climax of the movie. It's an amazing scene—it's fantastically written.
RUPERT GRINT: I like doing the stunt scene at the Whomping Willow. In the movie, I am supposedly being dragged by a dog, but really there was a guy pulling me along the set. It was fun—I swallowed a lot of grass.

How well do you know your character?
DANIEL: I know Harry very well. But I think there is this really, really, really dark side to Harry that you don't see that much of. In the third film, he actually has murderous thoughts. He would literally kill Sirius Black if he got the chance.
EMMA WATSON: Very well, especially since this is the third time around. In the beginning of working on the third movie, we were asked to write a piece on who we thought our characters were. It made me think about how Hermione uses her books and schoolwork as a comfort blanket. It's like a mask, so she doesn't have to deal with emotions or get homesick. She can just cover it all up by being clever.
RUPERT: Well, by playing them for three years, you get used to it. And there are certain things about my character that I relate to a lot, like we both have red hair, we both like sweets, we both are scared of spiders, and we both have big families.

How do you keep your energy up when you have to do the same scene many times in a row?
EMMA: I just tell myself every time I do it that this is the first time I've done it.
RUPERT: We have so much fun, and that provides a lot of motivation.

What do you do during your downtime28 on the set?
EMMA: I have a table-tennis table in my dressing room, so I play that. I listen to music, and there's lots of schoolwork to do.
RUPERT: I've got a pool table and a dartboard as well. And Dan and I attempted to make a crazy golf course in my room. We made a six-foot windmill out of these massive cardboard boxes and we got it spinning using an electric fan. We had plans to expand it out to the main studio—but it never got past one hole.

What other roles would you like to play?
DANIEL: I'd like to do The Simpsons.
EMMA: I've always wanted to play Velma in Chicago.

Are there other careers you would like to pursue in the future?
DANIEL: I love rock music. I also love writing. I write short stories just for fun, so I might develop that.
EMMA: I've always loved singing, dancing, any kind of performing, really. I also love art and sports.
RUPERT: When I was younger I wanted to be an ice cream man. That would be a cool job. I'd like to be a cartoonist as well. I love drawing.

What's your favorite American TV show?
DANIEL AND RUPERT: The Simpsons.
EMMA: Yep. Ooh, and Friends.

Can you go anywhere in England without being recognized?
DANIEL: A lot of people assume I can't do anything, which isn't true at all. I just do normal stuff like go out with my friends and go to the cinema.
EMMA: It's okay, because a lot of people [where I live] know who I am and they're used to seeing me around.
RUPERT: I get recognized quite a lot, which is weird29. When people come up to me, they're really nice.

Is it hard to watch the other films now?
DANIEL: Horrible, horrific. I can't watch myself.
EMMA: I can't watch them, either.
RUPERT: Speak for yourself. I love watching myself! [laughs]
DANIEL: Oh, I love watching you, too. [laughs] He was the only thing that kept me up at the premiere30 [of the first one]. I genuinely thought there was something wrong with the sound, because our voices were so high.
RUPERT: It was so weird.
DANIEL: It sounded like we all had just had some helium. We sound so completely different now.
